    More than 50 shops and stalls sell everything from herring and sausages to embroidery and hand-painted ornaments. The Skansen open air museum also puts on a traditional market, with a special exhibition on Swedish Christmas traditions over the centuries.
     
  • Lucia Day - 13.12.2004
    The coronation of Lucia, the bearer of light. Celebrated all over Sweden amid the darkest time of the year, when a young woman is chosen to lead the annual procession of light. Smaller celebrations in Helsinki, including parade at Cathedral-Finlandia Hall.

Marks the election of Gustav Vasa as king on June 6, 1523, laying the foundation of Sweden as a separate state, and the adoption on that date in 1809 of a new constitution including the establishment of civil rights and liberties.
